How the VSRT Simulates a Cross-Correlation Interferometer

چکیده
This document provides a detailed discussion of the mathematical theory behind how the VSRT Interferometer works, and how it simulates a modern cross-correlation interferometer that professional radio astronomers use. This discussion, in general, is not intended for students. Instructors are advised to read this and decide for themselves whether their students would benefit from such a discussion. The labs discussed in “VSRTlabs.pdf” can be conducted without a discussion of the mathematical theory and the students will still attain an intuitive understanding of how aperture synthesis data leads to images of radio sources. This discussion, here, in fact, is designed primarily for instructors who have some familiarity with aperture synthesis, although we do provide a very quick synopsis of the basic idea. The VSRT Interferometer is different, and simpler, than a professional radio astronomy interferometer, and so the purpose of this document is to provide an explanation of how the VSRT interferometer produces (mostly) the same kind of data.

Demonstrating the Principles of Aperture Synthesis with the Very Small Radio Telescope
We have developed a set of college-level, table-top labs for teaching the basics of radio interferometry and aperture synthesis. These labs are performed with the Very Small Radio Telescope (VSRT), an interferometer using satellite TV electronics as detectors and compact fluorescent light bulbs as microwave signal sources. The hands-on experience provided by the VSRT in these labs allows studen...

In this paper a method for digitally recording four quarter-reference-wave-holograms (by CCD) in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer setup, and reconstructing the object wave-front by numerical method is presented. The terms of direct transmission, auto-correlation and conjugate wave in the four wave reconstruction are cancelled out and only one original object wave is left after overlapping. Reconst...
متن کاملError Analysis, Design and Modeling of an Improved Heterodyne Nano-Displacement Interferometer
A new heterodyne nano-displacement with error reduction is presented. The main errors affecting the displacement accuracy of the nano-displacement measurement system including intermodulation distortion error, cross-talk error, cross-polarization error and phase detection error are calculated. In the designed system, a He-Ne laser having three-longitudinal-mode is considered as the stabiliz...
متن کاملAn Electronic Mach-Zehnder Quantum Eraser
We propose an electronic quantum eraser in which electrons are injected into a mesoscopic conductor in the quantum Hall regime. The conductor is composed of a two-path interferometer, an electronic analog of the optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and a quantum point contact detector capacitively coupled to the interferometer. While the interference of the output current at the interferometer ...
